Animation = not just technical

    Animation is not just technical, this is what our teacher Mike tries to explain us about his way of feeling animation. For two weeks we are going to learn philosofy of animation with Mike Nguyen. Here is his amazing blog where he talks about his process of doing animation : Rainplace. These weeks we are learning that animation doesn't have to be technical, which means that animation is not about how well you have drawn anatomically your character or how well you can depict keys and breakdowns or other principles. Animation firstt of all has to express a feeling, emotion, thought etc.       In old days when industry hasn't developed yet, artists had to explore the motion and feeling at the same time. Animation wasn't something cool or trendy. It was entertaining because it had a new way of  telling stories in order for audience to believe in it and stick to the characters or the mood it creates.
     Nowadays the industry of animation is big, the time is shorter and the requirments are higher, that's why directors should find a way a movie can be finished faster. Therefore animation became technical. It is technical because it should be able to be explained fast and easy, so that's why there are specific principles to it. The key and breackdown technic is more often required in nowadays studios, and is not just for 2D it works the same for 3D.
    Mike explained that the problem with key and breakdowns is that they give a very technical look to animation, because animation is movement and feeling, is life. The time in life can't be predicted, and you can't skip from year 2000 to 2090 and back to 2016. Maybe it will be possible one day, time traveling, but that's a completely different thing.
For these 2 weeks assignment we were about to create an interaction animation with some Disney characters.

This is the product of 2 weeks of animation philosophy:

Tips:
1. In interaction animation  is good to consider how you frame the characters in order to give more attention to their gesture and direct the focus easily from one character to another.
2. Don't exagerate too much the movements, exageration will make your character act, not perform which is not a way to make audience believe that your character are living the emotion not just showing it to audience.

Here is our last day with Mike, there was nice 2 weeks. Fooling around for a memory picture

Here Mike has shown us his amazing (secret) project called "My little world". He says it will be finished in 2020. I hope to see it on big screen, looking very forward to it.
There is a short trailer on youtube about it, but it doesn't say as much as the moments we have seen that day.
